What requirements do I need to meet in order to work in Germany?
Which professions are in high demand?
In Germany, there is a high demand for skilled workers in the fields of healthcare & nursing, skilled trades, hospitality & gastronomy, IT, engineering, and technical professions such as mechanical engineering.
What language skills are required?
In most professions, at least German B1 is required. For jobs in healthcare, B2 is often required, while in the IT sector, English is often sufficient.
How long does it take to obtain a visa?
The processing time varies depending on the country and consulate, but it typically takes between 3 and 6 months.
What is the expedited skilled worker procedure?
This is a special procedure that allows the employer to expedite the visa issuance process with the relevant immigration office in Germany. This can shorten the processing time.
Is there a probation period for foreign professionals?
Yes, as with all employees in Germany, a probation period of typically 3 to 6 months applies, depending on the employment contract.
Can I obtain German citizenship later with a work visa?
Yes, after 5 years of residence and meeting certain conditions, you can obtain a settlement permit. After 8 years, naturalization is possible.
What is the minimum salary for an EU Blue Card?
The minimum salary for an EU Blue Card in Germany in 2025 is 48,300 euros gross per year. For certain occupations in so-called shortage professions, the salary threshold is 43,759.80 euros gross per year (2025).
